Chapter Ten
Melanie spent the next couple days with her dad in the hospital, happy that he was doing better. She went to the store on Monday, noticing that Braydon and Danny were already hard at work.
âIs Alicia here yet?â she asked.
âNope. Havenât seen her,â Brayden said.
âWeird, sheâs not the type to be late. I hope everything is all right,â she said.
Melanie waited for about an hour. Suddenly, Alicia showed up. Her head was down, but Melanie quickly realized something happened.
âAlicia? Are you okay?â she asked.
"Not really. I don't want to talk about it," Alicia said.
âAre you sure?â
"I don't. It's hard to explain. I know if I tell anyone about it, I'll just get in trouble," Alicia said.
The atmosphere of the store changed. Danny looked at Alicia, running toward her with concern.
"Alicia, is everything all right?" Danny asked.
âI told you not to worry,â she snapped.
Alicia clocked in and started doing her job.
Melanie was not used to this. She was so sure that Alicia was doing better. When they parted ways, everything seemed as fine as they could be. But now, Alicia was randomly lashing out at people, and Melanie wasn't in the mood to deal with it.
Alicia was quiet, ignoring almost everyone but customers. Melanie noticed that Alicia was spending her time alone.
âAlicia Iââ
âPlease donât talk to me right now. I have a lot on my mind,â she said.
"Alicia, you don't have to do this. We can talk this out like adults," Melanie said.
"I really don't want to. I'm busy," Alicia replied.
"That's bull, Alicia. You were fine. Something has changed," she said.
Alicia looked at her.
"My mom is not treating me well," she said.
âIs she abusing you?â
Alicia looked around, waiting a moment before pulling her stomach up. There, a red welt decorated her skin.
"You can thank my mom for this. She punched me in the gut when we were fighting. She's terrible. I don't know what to do about it. Things have changed for me, but I'm scared," she said.
"Alicia, you have nothing to worry about," she replied.
"Yes, I do Melanie! I don't know how much more I can take. I'm being driven crazy. And Iâ¦I met my dad the other day," she explained.
Aliciaâs dad? But Melanie always thought he was just a drunkard, and that was the reason why Alicia lived with her mom.
"Isn't your dad abusive?"
"Not at all! He's just gay. He has a loving husband, and they're so happy. I feel different and powerless at the moment," Alicia said.
"Maybe we can work this out together. Do you need help," she asked Alicia. Melanie didn't know how much she could do. Alicia couldn't live with her, but if she needed assistance in standing up to her mom, she would be there in a heartbeat.
"I just need a callback on this job. I applied to an animation position. I want it so badly, Melanie. I'm trying so hard. I want to leave," she said.
Melanie extended her arm, wrapping it all around Alicia and from there, squeezing her tightly. Alicia moved inside, enjoying the feeling of her arms, and Melanie simply held her there.
